Educational Robotics Platform
We set out to make AI robotics more accessible for students and developers
The Challenge
While there’s a significant amount of academic literature on AI robotics, the barrier of entry to the field is high. We recognized the lack of an educational platform for students, developers, and DIYers seeking to experiment in this burgeoning field. We envisioned a tool that would inspire new uses of AI robotics by enabling innovation on an approachable, extensible platform. Our challenge was to create an engaging robotics platform that was rigorous enough for the academic AI community while also supporting a wide variety of non-academic applications and use cases.
Our Solution
Because our solution was intended to be DIY, we thought strategically about creating a scalable foundation for people to redesign, create, and rethink collaboratively. The current stage involves designing and developing our extensible, open-source platform while ensuring it caters to new users and seasoned professionals. To promote access for a range of users, those interested can download the part files and create 3D printable components.

Core Technologies
Unifying interest between two distinct communities
Academic AI communities and self-taught students work in different spaces, but there’s significant overlap in shared interests. From the outset, our vision for the educational bot was collaboration. The bot needed to be rigorous enough for academics but accessible for new users and those unfamiliar with the field.
Because education is the key, we’ve spent significant time exploring potential use cases and designed the technology with those in mind.
Open-source for widespread access
3D printing makes it possible to obtain complex parts more cheaply. With our platform, users can download the part files and print the components themselves. Off-the-shelf solutions are effective but often prohibitively expensive. With our educational robotics platform, we’ve created a learning and teaching tool that’s more universally accessible than other options.
