Telemus
We created a biometric recognition platform with thoughtfully integrated privacy features
The Challenge
Fresh designers, developers, and engineers set out to create a platform that allows users to leverage facial recognition, voice control, and gesture control to access their personal data. But there was a core challenge to solve: how do you surface personal information, requiring biometric authentication, while also respecting valid user concerns about privacy and the non-consensual collection of data?
Our Solution
Telemus uses the trio of biometric authenticators mentioned above: faces, voices, and gestures. Our goal was to create a safe, seamless, and frictionless user flow. But within the design, we also included features and functionality that, while providing a personalized synthesis of data and easy access to it, also assure the user that they control the experience.
Privacy by design
With being “seen” by technology comes the responsibility of protecting user data and privacy. Telemus was always envisioned with privacy and security in mind. To address user concerns, we included an integrated camera cover used to physically block the camera lens. Only with verbal consent is the camera is exposed, identifying the user and providing them with the data and access they need.
“Privacy by design” alleviates valid fears about being seen without consent, a metaphor for biometrics that we believe is worth continued exploration and testing.
The future state of Telemus
Telemus is constantly evolving. More features and functionality will be added as user testing and market research are performed by the Fresh team. Whether accessing your professional information on the way to work or seeing what time your appointment is, the use cases for Telemus are limited.
Always, front center with any coming feature set or additional functionality, is a respect for privacy. It’s the idea underlying Telemus, at a time when biometric technology is rapidly developing, and security and protection are more important than ever.
